Mass For Lives Lost At Sea
On Saturday February 4th at 10 am in St. Marys Parish Church, Youghal, the annual Mass for the souls of sailors and fishermen was celebrated. In attendance were the Irish Naval Service, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and the Coastguard Service. The music and hymns were given by members of the local lifeboat crew and medals awarded to sailors during the last century were brought to the altar.
At least ninety-four sailors and fishermen from the Ardmore-Youghal area were lost to the water since 1882. They have all been listed now and the boats and vessels involved are recorded. The places of the different tragedies and the dates of the happenings are also listed, where known.
In this year of the centenary of the loss of the Titanic, it is fitting that like Cobh, the port of Youghal should remember and honour its souls lost to the sea.
